About Community Action Nepal

Doug Scott CBE CANFundraising from the Original Everest Marathon supports the work of Community Action Nepal (canepal.org.uk). CAN is a UK based charity whose aim is to help communities living in the remote mountainous regions of Nepal, which are largely inaccessible by vehicles. The people from these areas are some of the poorest people in Asia.

Founded over 20 years ago by Doug Scott CBE, who in 1975 made the first British ascent of Everest; CAN’s very active patron is his friend and another mountaineering legend, Sir Chris Bonington.

CAN’s community projects in Nepal are principally rural health posts, schools, hostels for schoolchildren and the elderly, a regional school for the deaf, cultural community buildings and porter rescue shelters.

CAN’s operations have always been supported by mountaineers and mountain-lovers from around the world through donations, fund-raising events and lectures, plus the sale of Nepali goods and signed framed prints of Doug’s photographs. All this supports the operational activities of CAN’s Kathmandu office and Nepali staff who make our projects happen on the ground, plus the small UK-based staff.

The Nepal Earthquake on 25th April 2015, changed everything in the course of one day. Doug and the small UK staff and volunteers immediately had to redouble their efforts. Most of CAN’s projects had been destroyed or badly damaged and the communities devastated by many death and the loss of homes. In the immediate aftermath, it was estimated that £2m was needed to reconstruct all the project buildings in an earthquake-resilient manner. With the help of the international consultancy WYG, grants and other fund-raising from the CAN’s Nepal Earthquake Appeal, most of this has been raised and the programme of reconstruction largely completed. Subsequently the projects have increased in number and CAN is looking to generate new income streams to provide a sustainable future.
